University of York

Rowena Kasprowicz (nee Hanan) completed her PhD in Education at the University of York, where she investigated the effectiveness of explicit, input-based grammar instruction (form-meaning mapping versus form-spotting) for upper key stage 2 pupils (age 9 to 11) learning German. Alongside her PhD, Rowena taught German in three Yorkshire primary schools, and developed and co-delivered professional development workshops based on the form-meaning mapping approach with Dr Emma Marsden.

Rowena has explored innovative techniques for classroom-based foreign language teaching as a Researcher in the DC Labs, she has developed and evaluated a narrative-driven digital game for foreign language learning (Gaming Grammar project).

Rowena has now taken up a lectureship at the University of Reading.  Development of Gaming Grammar continues under her supervision.  The next phase will be launching a version in Spanish.
